“Jesus” is an Anglicized form of the Greek name Yesous or Iesous found in the New Testament.
Yesous or Iesous represents the Hebrew Bible name Yeshua, which occurs as “Jeshua” in English Bibles.
In Medieval English the “J” was pronounced as a “Y” is now.

“Yehoshua”
Yeshua, in turn, is a shortened form of the name Yehoshua

(“Joshua” in English Bibles).

The second element of the name Yehoshua is a form of the Hebrew verb yasha which means to deliver, save or rescue.

The name Yeshua conveys the idea that God (YHVH or Yahweh) delivers or saves his people, eventually through His servant Messiah.

Variations of the Hebrew name Yeshua (Jesus).  

The top two are pronounced Yehoshua, and the bottom one is a contraction that is pronounced Yeshua.  

This spelling and pronunciation was typical
in Yerushalayim/ Jerusalem during the Second Temple period.
